Manchester United made it two wins from two as they thrashed RB Leipzig at Old Trafford courtesy of a hat-trick from Marcus Rashford and goals from Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial.
United went into the game off the back of a 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Saturday and they kept another clean sheet and were never troubled by Julian Nagelsmann’s side.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made five changes from the team that lined up against Chelsea, with Nemanja Matic, Greenwood, Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek and Martial all coming in.
Greenwood opened the scoring in the first half but it was the man who replaced him that sealed the win for United, with Rashford, introduced in the 63rd minute, in irresistible form as he scored twice within 15 minutes of coming on to put the game out of reach. Anthony Martial scored from the penalty spot after he was felled in the box before Rashford wrapped up his treble in stoppage time.

Solskjaer assesses Van De Beek performance
This is what Solskjaer had to say about Van De Beek and Pogba’s performance:
You tell me. Donny is a fantastic player, a fantastic boy, you see the work on and off the ball. You see the defensive shape, he covers the ground, so clever with his movement, so pleased with both of them.
Solskajer praises team performance
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer immediately turned to the team performance when asked about Marcus Rashford’s heroics tonight by BT Sport:
He came on did well, impact, we want that from the subs. That’s only possible when others have laid the groundwork. What a shift they put in. They do make you work, Leipzig. High press, counter press, the intensity, we had to dig deep and work hard for eachother. Spaces open up when you’re winning. Today was a day we had to rest a few, this season is relentless, we could use the squad.
This group is coming together. We’ve added a few quality players, more quality you have and spirit you have the better chance of a performance.
On Mason Greenwood:
He normally does that with his first shot [scores], so efficient in front of goal, great finisher. Very pleased with the timing of run, great pass from Paul. I wasn’t sure if he was off, there were some tight calls from the referee and we were on lucky side today.
Why Rashford let Martial take the penalty
Marcus Rashford turned down the opportunity to seal his hattrick from the penalty spot, and has told BT what he told his strike partner:
“A little bit, a little bit. I feel confident with Anthony taking them as well. So no problem.
“It’s about the next game now so it’s important for us to get three points.”
Marcus Rashford tells BT Sport:
“The manager wanted me to up the tempo. That for us means going forward. There was definitely spaces there. We got Bruno and Paul on the ball. We looked dangerous throughout and that we could score every time we went forward.
“It was a real team performance. The ones who started did well and the substitutes did well too. We can’t ask for much more than that in terms of the attitude and the intent to go and kill the game off. It worked in our favour.”
Lost for words
Leipzig had no response to United’s brilliance tonight.
What a night
United’s biggest Champions League win at home in 13 years.
Ferdinand and Scholes react
They won’t be complaining with any aspect of that performance tonight.
Watch Rashford’s goals
After his first goal needed a help from VAR, this was his second…
And he sealed his first United hat-trick like this..
Player Ratings – Fred and Rashford superb
David de Gea
Made a routine stop at 1-0 and an even better stop with the scoreline the same in the second-half. 8
In nigh-on impregnable form on a night he seldom attacked to keep watch in defence. Occasionally made up a back three. 8
His excellent form continues. Nigh-on flawless against another esteemed opponent and showed some rare adventure in bringing the ball forward. 8
United utilised his aerial prowess at set-pieces and Maguire never seemed likely to be beaten in his own area. 8
Offered a decent dead-ball delivery and more urgent in providing width for the midfield diamond. Did little wrong in either half. 8

Rashford looks for a hat-trick
Marcus Rashford produces some brilliant skill in the box to make some space, taking four defenders out of the game. It would be a sensational goal, but Konate spoils it and gets a block in.
