Jurgen Klopp “wishes” Liverpool were further ahead in the Premier League table but believes the title race is so close this season due to “how tough it is” for every team.
The Reds are joint top on points with Manchester United but ahead by goal difference while the likes of Tottenham, Leicester City and Chelsea are all close behind with Man City also in touching distance holding two games in hand.
“Last season was very tough for us as well,” Klopp said when asked if this campaign is tougher than the last, which Liverpool won at a canter.
“It’s not that we thought it was easy, it was really tough and this year is tough again.
“We wish it would not be that close but I’m not surprised it is this close.
“We have our situation and all the other clubs have their situation and our season is so far so good.
“Not more, not less and we try to be ready for each game.
“Now it’s Southampton who will ask for different things, then Aston Villa and United and we have to be ready again. This season is tough for supporters.

“If you’re a neutral you’ll love this season though, because it will probably go to the wire probably but it’s tough for all of us, that’s why it’s so close.”
The Liverpool manager also spoke about Curtis Jones and how he will learn from the mistake at West Bromwich Albion that led to a corner before their equalising goal.

“This is a very intense period for him and he’s done outstandingly so far.
“I don’t know what situation we would have been with all the injuries if he wouldn’t have been there.
“I’m really happy about everything, football players make mistakes or wrong decisions – that can happen, especially when you get tired. That was for sure the case at West Brom.
“But against Newcastle again, top game and really good player. All good.”
