A pub has closed for a deep clean as staff await results of their coronavirus tests, after two workers were infected with the virus.
The Lakeside Inn, just off Leam Lane, in Gateshead, has temporarily closed its doors.
The bar announced the news on Facebook on Wednesday night, advising customers to follow NHS advice if they were worried they had symptoms. Those who’ve recently visited the pub are likely to be contacted by test and trace officials.
A number of people who work there are now self-isolating, a spokesperson said.
In the statement, a spokesperson for the bar said: “We have taken the decision after careful consideration to temporarily close the restaurant [t]o ensure the safety of our customers and staff.
“We have hired the services of Premier Asbestos to conduct an industrial deep clean that will be certified as an added measure to clean the premises to Covid regulations.
“To be transparent all of the staff from the Lakeside have now all been tested for Covid-19 and we are awaiting all the results back.
“A number of our staff have taken the decision to self isolate following 2 positive reading amongst the team.
“We are now working with Public Health England on the correct measure and steps to take along with track and trace who will contact the customers.
“We are supporting the staff in the decision. We will reopen very soon once the deep clean is complete and will only be allowing staff back on shift who have a negative NHS certificate.”
The spokesperson added: “We are so sorry if this decision has caused any distress or concerns to our customers and if you believe you have any symptoms, advise you to follow the most recent public health guidance available on the NHS website.
“We would like to reassure you of the safety robust practices that will be in place when we reopen to keep you and our staff in a safe environment.”
The closure comes as Gateshead health bosses reveal the area has seen more coronavirus cases in August so far than in the whole of June or July.
The number of cases in Gateshead hit 16 in the week leading up to August 18, up from 10 the week before.
