Coronavirus infections rise in 11 areas of England – see the full rate for your area – Mirror Online

Coronavirus cases in one county in England has more than trebled in a week resulting in it having the highest infection rate in the country.

Data released today by Public Health England shows while there has been a drop in infection rates across England 11 local areas out of the 304 have seen an increase.

Rutland in the East Midlands has been named as having the highest rate in England with 199 new cases recorded in the seven days to February 4.

This is the equivalent of 498.4 cases per 100,000 people which is more than three times up from 162.8 cases in the seven days to January 28.

With 319 new cases Corby in Northamptonshire has the second highest rate but it is down from 501.3 to 441.7.

Walsall in the West Midlands recorded 1,258 new cases and is in third place even though its rate has decreased from from 483.4 to 440.7 .

The figures, which have been calculated by the PA news agency from health agency data, suggest the lockdowns currently in place across the UK are continuing to have an impact in driving down the number of new reported cases of coronavirus.

On Monday the UK’s official coronavirus death toll rose by 333, the lowest rise since December 2020.

The figures, for the seven days to February 4, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The news comes as Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the government had bought 50 million vaccine doses from CureVac following concerns about the South African coronavirus strain.

A small-scale trial of the AstraZeneca jab reportedly revealed it offered as little as 10% protection against the variant.

The Health Secretary said: “It’s imperative that our vaccination programme keeps pace with any changes to this virus.

“The work has three parts. First the evidence is that the existing vaccines have some effect against new variants, particularly preventing serious illness and mortality.

“So the existing vaccine rollout is mission critical for tackling new variants too.

“Second, we are working with existing vaccine suppliers on potential booster jabs targeted specifically at the new variants to strengthen this protection further.

“Third we are building on shore boosting capacity, including cutting edge MRNA technologies to give us the ability to rapidly to develop and deploy vaccines against any new variants or similar diseases in the future.”
