A German Shepherd found abandoned and tied to a post was so traumatised humans could not get near it.
The poor pooch was dumped near a lay-by on the A515. Rescuers found the canine covered in matted fur, filthy and smelling “awful”.
Rescuers still aren’t sure whether the four legged friend found in Derbyshire is a boy or a girl because they have had to keep their distance.
Dog carers think the only way it will get groomed is if it is sedated first.
It was hidden out of sight and only found when a farmer heard it barking desperately on Tuesday.
“We could see the dog is white German Shepherd and it is in a very poor condition and we believe it’s quite old.
“The dog is very scared of any human contact so we are taking it very slowly.”
She said: “They left the dog hoping no-one would find it – it’s scared to death.
“The dog is older and its fur is all matted up and the smell is awful. We think it might have to be sedated to be groomed.
“We’re having to leave the dog to settle in as it’s still very frightened and build up the confidences with people, going day-by-day.
“The dog likes its food so hopefully it can won round with treats.
“Hopefully after a couple of days, it will start settling down as it is a strange place to it at the moment.”
She added that people had questioned whether the dog is a German Shepherd online but says it “definitely is” and may look different as its ears appear back.
It comes after another abandoned pup was found heartlessly left outside a supermarket in Chicago.
Now called Theo, the adorable canine was found by hero couple Jenny and Scott.
Theo, who was dumped despite being terminally ill, is currently living out his dying days by fulfilling a doggy bucket list.
