Another area in England records Covid rise as six places still see cases go up – Mirror Online

More than 300 of England’s towns and cities have recorded a weekly drop in Covid-19 cases, latest figures show – though six are still seeing a rise despite lockdown.

A month after Boris Johnson plunged the country into lockdown, 306 of 315 local authority areas have seen a drop in cases, while three remained unchanged.

Sandwell in the West Midlands now has the highest rate in the country, despite a sharp fall in confirmed infections.

It comes as new Public Health England data revealed the West Midlands has overtaken London as the worst hotspot.

Knowsley in Merseyside has the second highest rate, but this has fallen dramatically from 778.2 cases per 100,000 people to 487.9.

Rutland, East Lindsey, North Kesteven, Gateshead, Torbay and Hartlepool are the only places to see more cases in seven days to Sunday than the week before.

It comes as the number of new infections plunges across the UK, with Department of Health figures showing 48,725 cases have been identified in the past week – a fall of 25.7 per cent.

But England’s chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty, warned that the number of daily deaths would remain high for some time, with a further 915 fatalities confirmed today.

But he said experts believe we have now passed the peak of the current wave.

Earlier today NHS England confirmed that the youngest victim to die in hospital was just seven years old.

Figures released earlier today reveal that the West Midlands has now overtaken London as the UK’s worst Covid hotspot.

While case rates per 100,000 have fallen across all regions, the region now has a rate of 319.9, Public Health England’s weekly Covid surveillance report has found.

This is the highest rate of any region, but down from 427.5 in the previous week.

Six areas recording week-on-week rise in rates:

  • Rutland (up from 172.8 to 230.4)
  • East Lindsey (94.5 to 143.2)
  • North Kesteven (177.9 to 194.2)
  • Gateshead (202.4 to 212.8)
  • Torbay (167.3 to 171.0)
  • Hartlepool (319.2 to 320.3)

“I think that most of my colleagues think we are past the peak,” Prof Whitty told a Downing Street briefing last night.

“Now that doesn’t mean you could never have another peak. But, at this point in time, provided people continue to follow the guidelines, we’re on the downward slope of cases, of hospitalisations and of deaths, in all four of the nations of the United Kingdom.

“So I think, we do think, at this point, this peak at least, we are past.”
