Lille are set to return to Rangers with a £17 million bid for Alfredo Morelos – with Premiership new boys West Bromwich Albion waiting in the wings and preparing a rival offer.
The French side have already agreed terms with the Colombian striker but they have still to thrash out a fee with the Ibrox outfit.
That has alerted West Brom who failed with a £12 million bid for Morelos last summer, when they were still in the Championship.
A lack of firepower almost cost West Brom automatic promotion and it is something that Bilic is keen to address and that is why Morelos is high on his wanted list.
Lille, however, still remain in the box seat and they are aware they remain Morelos’s preferred next destination.
They have had multiple bids turned down in recent weeks and sources in France claim that Lille have already been told that £15 million won’t be enough to land Morelos.
The Ligue One side haven’t been given a price by Rangers but they are set to up the ante again.
The Light Blues also know that Lille are set to be cash-rich as they are on the verge of selling their own striker Victor Osimhen to Napoli in a deal reported to be around £60 million.
Steven Gerrard has always made it clear that he won’t sell unless the price is right for them and a deal is on their terms.
Former club HJK Helsinki would also be due around £1 million of any deal as a percentage sell-on from the original sale in 2017.
Rangers have made it clear they are under no financial pressure to sell and they won’t be bullied into a deal.
Morelos, as it stands, is likely to spearhead the Rangers attack when they make their Premiership bow away to Aberdeen tomorrow.
The Colombian international has scored 77 goals in 137 appearances for the Ibrox giants but has never hidden his desire to play in one of Europe’s top leagues.
Rangers director of football Ross Wilson and Gerrard have already identified a number of striking replacements if Morelos is sold.
Peterborough striker Ivan Toney, who has already been the subject of a failed bid from Celtic, is on their list but there are several options, with the likes of a loan for Rhian Brewster from Liverpool and re-ignited interest in Marco Mirko Maric of Osijek also being mentioned.
Rangers have also scouted Livingston’s Lyndon Dykes and Dundee United’s Lawrence Shankland regularly.
Gerrard was also keen to bring back Florian Kamberi from Hibs on loan, with Greg Doherty going back the other way, but the Swiss star has told him he wants a permanent move.
