The Big Ten doesn’t put out an official preseason poll each season, but in the unofficial projection compiled in November by media covering the conference, Michigan was projected at No. 6. However, as the dust settled on the league’s regular-season slate, the Wolverines stood atop the pack as the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, despite a 70-64 Sunday loss at Michigan State.
Even after the loss, Michigan is still a projected No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament in Jerry Palm’s Bracketology, and the Wolverines can solidify that spot with a strong showing in what figures to be a brutal league tournament. With nine Big Ten teams projected to make the Big Dance, the league has a deep well of juggernauts looking to build momentum as March Madness picks up.
Whoever comes out on top on Sunday evening will have withstood a gauntlet over four days. Among the top seeds and favorites are No. 1 seed Illinois and No. 2 seed Iowa. The Illini closed the season strong with big wins over Michigan and Ohio State and could play their way into a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament if successful this week. The Hawkeyes, meanwhile, will rely heavily on Player of the Year candidate Luka Garza to carry the load and bring them back to prominence.
