The stage is set for Saturday’s ACC Tournament championship game as No. 4 seed Georgia Tech will go for its first conference tournament title since 1993 against No. 2 seed Florida State following a dramatic Friday for a tournament that’s been hit hard by COVID-19 protocols.
With No. 1 seed Virginia removed from the bracket due to a positive COVID-19 test Friday morning, the ACC Tournament’s semifinal round was left with just one game. That one game that was played managed to deliver as the Seminoles squeaked out a 69-66 victory over No. 6 seed North Carolina.
After securing a double-bye in the tournament and then having its quarterfinal opponent, Duke, ousted by a COVID-19 issue, Florida State was playing for the first time this week after what amounted to a triple-bye. By contrast, the Tar Heels were playing their third game in three days. Yet, UNC appeared to have plenty of energy left in the second half as it clawed back from a 35-24 halftime deficit.
Ultimately, the Seminoles survived as center Balsa Koprivica scored 10 of his game-high 17 points in the second half against UNC’s deep well of quality big men. The victory should help the Seminoles reclaim some of the momentum that was lost during an upset loss at Notre Dame that cost FSU a regular-season title last Saturday.
